Avila Guerrero, as a combatant and commander of the 71st Tactical Group of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) in Angola, recounts, in a concise summary, the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, a crucial event in the defeat of the invading South African forces.
The Cuban Book Institute (ICL) noted that this volume relates episodes of the 128 days, from November 15, 1987, to March 23, 1989, with which joint troops of the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola (FAPLA), the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), along with Soviet and Cuban military forces, participated in the six major battles of that conflict.
The confrontation against a large contingent of South African and UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) troops ended with the victory of the Angolan forces and their allies, which led to the eventual respect for Angola’s sovereignty, the independence of Namibia, and the collapse of the repudiated Apartheid regime.
The launch will be on Calle de Madera, next to the Arms Square in Old Havana, at 11:00 hours, local time.
