Finland warns of global recession due to Middle East conflict

Helsinki, March 27 (Prensa Latina) Finnish President Alexander Stubb warned that the economic consequences of the conflict in the Middle East will surpass the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and could trigger a global recession.

He also warned of a rift within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) between the liberal north and the United States, which is oriented toward transactional agreements.

The Finnish president’s statements, reported by the media outlet Kansan Uutiset from the Swedish capital, reflect growing European concern about the escalating conflict in the region and its impact on the global economy.

Stubb emphasized that the current context shows a collapse of international institutions at a critical historical moment. “I think we are now in a situation where everything could lead to a self-imposed global recession. That is what happens when you act outside of international rules and norms.” “We are witnessing the collapse of international institutions and rules precisely at the historical moment when we need them most,” Stubb stated.

The Finnish president questioned the “transactional” approach of US President Donald Trump’s administration to foreign policy. “Diplomacy is rarely about negotiation. Interests may be transactional, but even then, it is necessary to seek mutual benefit,” the president emphasized.
