Chilean ombudsman calls for response to school violence

Santiago, Chile, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) The Children's Ombudsman's Office demanded a comprehensive response from the Chilean State to the violent events at a school in the city of Calama, in which one person was killed, and four others were injured.

A student at the Obispo Silva Lezaeta Institute stabbed a female inspector on Friday morning, killing her and injuring another staff member and three students.

The Ombudsman stated, after expressing its sorrow and categorical condemnation of these events, that the State’s response must be comprehensive, both in clarifying the case and in providing psychosocial support for students, educational staff, and affected families.

The entity noted the urgent need to expedite the publication of the Law on School Coexistence and Respectful Treatment, unanimously approved by Congress in January.

This law includes measures for the education, promotion, prevention, and eradication of all forms of violence and discrimination in schools.

The Children’s Ombudsman’s Office believes that while the implementation of this legislation progresses, reviewing and strengthening school coexistence protocols, consolidating early warning systems, and improving intersectoral coordination are essential.

It also warns that this problem cannot be solved with physical security measures, such as metal detectors, but rather with structural strategies focused on prevention, boosting respectful treatment, and strengthening socio-emotional well-being.
