Ecuador and Colombia mark two months of trade tension

Quito, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) Trade tensions between Ecuador and Colombia reach their second month on Wednesday without a solution, with a drop in bilateral trade, and no concrete progress in the announced talks.

The tariffs imposed by Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Colombian products, based on a lack of cooperation from Bogota on security matters, took effect on February 1.

The administration of Colombian President Gustavo Petro rejected these accusations and responded with both tariff measures and the suspension of electricity sales to Ecuador, although it was already willing to resume energy exchange.

The conflict remains in a state of uncertainty after the deputy foreign ministers of both countries met on March 25 within the framework of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) and agreed to open new technical talks.

No dates or a clear roadmap have been defined so far for these talks.

Amid the dispute, President Noboa questioned the benefits of the Andean bloc and the trade balance with Colombia in a recent radio interview.
