Government admits it must accelerate changes in Uruguay

Montevideo, March 6 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan government must "accelerate" changes and transformations, acknowledged the Secretary of the Presidency, Alejandro Sanchez, in an interview published today.

Sanchez admitted that “the people are demanding it,” a reference to survey results indicating discontent with the government’s performance within the Broad Front (FA) party.

“We have to accelerate our efforts so that these things become visible.

We undoubtedly need to communicate what we are doing better, and it is also true that Broad Front members are demanding more rapid transformations,” he told the newspaper El Pais.

“What we have is a discussion about the speed of these changes, because changes are happening,” he indicated.

“What people want is to see more changes; they are demanding that things happen,” he commented.

“Our task is to take up the challenge and accelerate management processes, improve them, and ensure that people feel these changes are more real, concrete, and accessible,” he reiterated. Sanchez referred to the “political discussion within the Broad Front regarding international positions, regarding what happened in Gaza, regarding other perspectives on the region, and that is always on the table and often creates tension within the Broad Front’s inner circle.” He also mentioned the proposal to tax the wealthiest one percent, promoted by the PIT-CNT labor federation and supported by a sector of the Broad Front, in order to dedicate that tax to combating poverty, especially child poverty.

“That has encouraged a segment of the Broad Front to say that this is a debate they want to have, and I think it’s healthy for people to discuss tax justice”, he said. abo/arm/mem/ool
