El Salvador: Deadline for parties to hold internal elections expires

San Salvador, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) The deadline for political parties to call for internal elections expires on Tuesday, in accordance with the provision of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) and the Political Parties Law.

The 11 political parties established to participate in the general elections on February 28, 2027, have until this Tuesday to convene their members to set the date for their internal elections.

Only the Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberacion Nacional (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front-FMLN), the Partido de Concertacion Nacional (National Coalition Party-PCN), the Partido Democrata Cristiano (Christian Democratic Party-PDC), the Fuerza Solidaria (Solidarity Force-FS) party, the Gran Alianza por la Unidad Nacional (Grand Alliance for National Unity-GANA), and the Fraternidad Patriota Salvadoreña (Salvadoran Patriotic Fraternity-FPS) party had initiated the process until Monday.

The Democracia Salvadoreña (Salvadoran Democracy-DS) party joined this group on Monday, and also called on its members to select candidates for president, vice president, members of the Legislative Assembly, and municipal councils, in a process that must conclude on July 29 of this year.

Although they did not specify the date of its internal elections, the DS party’s Electoral Commission stated that the registration period for candidates will run from April 8 to May 8.

The Nuevas Ideas (New Ideas-NI) party, the frontrunner in the election, the Alianza Republicana Nacionalistas (Nationalist Republican Alliance-ARENA), and the Partido Independiente Salvadoreño (Salvadoran Independent Party-PAIS) had not yet called on their members to begin this process.
