In a statement, the state’s prosecuting body detailed that three of the operations are taking place in Santa Rita and a fourth in Villanueva, municipalities in the departments of Copan and Cortes, respectively.
The raids stem from an investigation that began on December 5, 2022, when authorities intercepted a container in Choloma (Cortes) transporting weapons hidden in packages from Nashville, USA, the source specified.
The shipment contained nine pistols, a rifle, 22 magazines, and unfired cartridges of various calibers, all of which had been smuggled into the country and distributed through different courier companies.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that the criminal organization has transnational ties for the purchase and distribution of weapons, reinforcing the hypothesis of a large-scale, organized operation.
Furthermore, it was confirmed that the weapons entered Honduran territory without legal authorization, for the purpose of sale.
The Prosecutor’s Office reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling this network and preventing the trafficking of high-caliber firearms and ammunition, which, in the hands of organized crime, bring grief to the population of this Central American nation, the official report emphasized.
