The Communist Party of Vietnam’s (CPV) website stated that the trip by Vietnam’s top leader, his first abroad since his election as head of State, is in response to an invitation from his counterpart, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President of China.
To Lam and Xi held a phone call in late January, following the successful celebration of the 14th CPV National Congress, in which To Lam emphasized that the forum fulfilled a momentous historical mission by taking a profound stock of Vietnam’s revolutionary practice after 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal).
He also underscored that the Congress defined the strategic objectives and directions not only for the next five years but also for the country’s long-term development, and reaffirmed the determination to build a peaceful, independent, democratic, prosperous, and happy nation, steadily advancing towards socialism.
To Lam reaffirmed the great importance and top priority that Vietnam attaches to the development of relations with China, which, he said, must remain a pillar of lasting stability with profound strategic significance.
