“We are deeply concerned by reports of a large number of civilian casualties in Lebanon,” Randhir Jaiswal, spokesman for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, declared on Friday.
The diplomat noted that for India, a country that contributes troops to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and is committed to peace and security in Lebanon, the way events are unfolding is very worrying.
He reiterated that New Delhi has always emphasized that the protection of civilians is the highest priority in any conflict.
Jaiswal pointed out that respect for international law, as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, is fundamental.
“Our embassy in Lebanon remains in close contact with the Indian community to ensure their safety and security,” the spokesperson said.
Last Wednesday, following the announcement of a temporary cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, Israel intensified its airstrikes in Lebanon, bombing downtown Beirut.
This constitutes a flagrant violation of the truce, as one of the conditions set by Iran and accepted by President Donald Trump is the end of attacks against Tehran’s allies in the region.
Experts say that Tel Aviv is carrying out all military actions with the approval of the United States government.
