Upon arriving in Islamabad at the head of the Iranian negotiating delegation, the leader declared that his country’s previous experience in talks with the United States has been marked by broken commitments.
“Unfortunately, our experience negotiating with the Americans has always been characterized by failure and broken promises,” Ghalibaf stated, as quoted by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The Speaker of Parliament also denounced that, during previous negotiation processes, Iran was the target of attacks, which, he asserted, demonstrates a lack of trust in the American side.
Nevertheless, he reiterated Tehran’s willingness to reach an agreement if Washington demonstrates genuine commitment and guarantees the rights of the Iranian people. Ghalibaf warned that if the talks are used as a delaying tactic, his country is prepared to defend its interests, while insisting on the need to lift sanctions and cease military actions in the region.
For his part, US Vice President J.D. Vance stated before traveling to Pakistan that his country is willing to negotiate if Iran acts in good faith, although he warned of consequences otherwise.
The Iranian delegation also includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the Governor of the Central Bank, Abdolnasser Hemmati, and several members of parliament.
