Thousands of people participated in this initiative, launched by the National Association of Friendship between Italy and Cuba (ANAIC), and convened by numerous political, social, and labor organizations.
The goal of this important demonstration is to reaffirm the growing support for Cuba in Italy, given the intensification of the US economic blockade imposed for more than 60 years, which has recently been compounded by new genocidal measures, according to Marco Papacci, president of ANAIC, in recent statements to Prensa Latina.
The call launched by this organization, in conjunction with the Gianni Mina Foundation, chaired by Loredana Macchietti, widow of the renowned intellectual and great friend of the island, was joined by dozens of important political groups such as Power to the People, Italian Left, Green Europe, Communist Refoundation, and Socialist Homeland.
Also mobilized were the Communist Party, the ARCI Social Promotion Association, the Global Peace Mobilization Network, the Agency for Cultural and Economic Exchange with Cuba (AICEC), the Base Trade Union (USB), and the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL).
Representatives of the Five Star Movement (M5S), the “La Villetta for Cuba” Association, Socialist Homeland, Seeds of Peace, the Federation of Metalworkers and Employees (FIOM), the youth organizations Cambiare Rotta and Alternative Student Opposition (OSA), and associations of Cubans residing in Italy will also participate.
Among the hundreds of prominent figures who signed the appeal are Argentine Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Brazilian theologian and social activist Frei Betto, Italian politician and writer Alessandro di Battista, religious figure Alex Zanotelli, and renowned singer Fiorella Mannoia.
Also included are former UN Deputy Secretary-General Pino Arlacchi; ambassadors Elena Basile and Alberto Bradanini; scientific researcher Fabrizio Chiodo; former mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris; Olympic pentathlon champion Daniele Masala; and MEPs Valentina Ferlan and Carolina Morace.
