Gaza: Fuel shortage due to Israeli blockade hits healthcare

Ramallah, April 12 (Prensa Latina) One of the main generators at Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza Strip is offline due to a fuel shortage, a consequence of the blockade imposed by Israel on the Palestinian territory.

The enclave’s Ministry of Health warned that technical teams have begun using less powerful generators to supply electricity to vital departments during specific hours.

The Ministry stated that the shutdown of generators supplying power to hospitals and health centers will be a catastrophe for the wounded and sick in the territory.

This situation threatens the operation of intensive care units, surgical wards, and daycare centers, and limits care for thousands of patients, including those suffering from kidney failure.

Just a few days ago, Muhammad Abu Salmiya, the general director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, warned of the deteriorating health of kidney patients due to the irregular electricity supply to vital departments.

Abu Salmiya explained that the intensive care units, dialysis, operating rooms, and neonatal units face a real danger that threatens the lives of numerous people.   He noted that the complex’s administration was forced to adopt austerity measures by reducing the operation of high-capacity generators and resorting to less efficient alternatives, which could cause serious technical failures in sensitive medical equipment.
