The US withdrawal, after 21 hours of discussions, as Vance implied at a press briefing, stemmed from the lack of agreement due to Iran’s rejection of the White House proposals.
Washington’s withdrawal caused confusion, as the continuation of talks was anticipated for this Sunday.
The Iranian government had earlier announced on its X profile that the talks had concluded on Saturday and technical experts from both sides would exchange documents.
Following Vance’s remarks, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Baghaei affirmed in Tehran that no-one expected an agreement in a single meeting.
He told Al Jazeera that Iran and the United States had reached an understanding on several issues, but still had differences of opinion on two or three important matters.
Baghaei added that contacts and consultations would continue between Iran, Pakistan, and their other friends in the region.
