The message states, “Please accept my sincere congratulations on your election as President of the Republic of Iraq. I wish you success in this high office.”

Putin expressed, in his letter, his hope that Amedi will further develop the friendly relations between the two countries.

More than 220 members of the Iraqi Parliament voted in the runoff in favor of Amedi’s candidacy for the presidency, five months after the Legislative Assembly election.

The Iraqi Parliament was unable to elect a president during that period due to disagreements among the leading Kurdish parties regarding the candidate.

Amedi served, in the government of Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani, as presidential advisor and Ecology Minister until 2024.
