ECLAC: Cooperation is a driving force for accelerating 2030 Agenda

Santiago, Chile, Apr 17 (Prensa Latina) The Latin American countries gathered at ECLAC reaffirmed their willingness to continue working toward the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda and acknowledged the importance of regional cooperation in advancing this purpose.

The report presented at the 9th forum on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicates that, at the current pace, only 19 percent of the goals will be achieved in the region, 42 percent are progressing in the right direction but too slowly, and 39 percent are stalled.

Held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Chile from April 13 to 16, ministers and high-level representatives considered that, in this scenario, cooperation among countries can facilitate joint progress toward the SDGs.

This would allow for the exchange of experiences and best practices and boost coordinated efforts to increase the collective impact of policies and initiatives throughout the region, in accordance with national circumstances and priorities.

The United Nations Member States adopted a global action plan in 2015, establishing 17 SDGs to be achieved by 2030, aimed at boosting human well-being, protecting the planet, and fostering prosperity.

Among those are ending poverty and hunger, access to quality health and education, gender equality, decent work, clean water and sanitation, affordable energy, sustainable cities and communities, and partnerships to achieve the Goals.

The meeting was attended by 1,200 people, including some 120 government delegates, more than 500 from civil society, and several representatives from academia, the private sector, and international organizations.
