In her remarks, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated: “I want to propose a declaration against military intervention in Cuba. May dialogue and peace prevail.”
In the presence of the heads of state participating in the IV Summit in Defense of Democracy, the president also stressed that there “never was” a diplomatic crisis with Spain following the request for an apology for the Conquest, and that the important thing is to recognize “the strength of the indigenous peoples” for Mexico.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico, as host of the upcoming summit, would focus on “a well-being-centered economy and a democracy that responds to the true needs of the people.”
Democracy means “raising love over hate, cultivating generosity instead of greed, fraternity over war.”
She highlighted that her country stands for “the self-determination of peoples, non-intervention, the peaceful resolution of disputes, the rejection of the use of force, and the legal equality of states.”
Sheinbaum also emphasized on cooperation and respect for human rights so that democratic principles continue to be a contribution from her country, because: “democracy implies freedom, but freedom is an empty word if it is not accompanied by social justice, sovereignty, and the dignity of the people,” she said.
And she affirmed that: “When we talk about democracy, it is not the democracy of the elites. It is not the democracy of the concentration of wealth, but the democracy of its distribution.”
