Hundreds of people gathered in front of the memorial house that serves as the PCU’s local headquarters and where the crime took place, on Agraciada Avenue.

That morning, repressive forces surrounded the building and, although the occupants tried to surrender by coming out with their hands raised, they were shot in the street or as they appeared at the door.

Today’s event became an opportunity for the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) to reaffirm its political commitment to strengthening and expanding the popular movement in support of the Uruguayan people’s main demands.The large audience also endorsed the expressions of solidarity with Cuba.

The PCU’s Secretary General, Oscar Andrade, said that April is the month of remembrance for the eight communist martyrs, but also the anniversary of the defeat at Playa Giron, Cuba, of the mercenary invasion organized and armed by the United States in 1961.

He referred to Washington’s decades-long aggression against the island, including invasions, sabotage, biological warfare, bombings of hotels, and the criminal and persistent economic and other forms of blockade against Cuba.

One cannot be indifferent to such barbarity, Andrade pointed out, mentioning actions taken by the PCU, including the creation of spaces for the sale of bonds to raise funds for the besieged island.

Earlier, Natalia Diaz, a young communist deputy from the Broad Front bloc, emphasized that Cuba is now also resisting the energy blockade imposed by the White House, in yet another turn of the screw to suffocate the Cuban people.

The parliamentarian criticized the United States for not being able to accept a socialist revolution in its vicinity, a revolution that has been an example of resistance and anti-imperialism.
