Casa de las Americas Prize: A Bay of Pigs in the Cuban cultural field

Havana, April 20 (Prensa Latina) The president of Casa de las Americas, Abel Prieto, defined the Literary Prize awarded annually by the institution as a living symbol of revolutionary culture and a great victory for Cuba, amidst a complex scenario exacerbated by the threats and intentions of the United States government to invade the Caribbean nation.

This event brings together a diverse range of authors, and this year, despite the current circumstances that forced adjustments to the program, it is being held thanks to its international prestige and the people who believe in it, noted the Cuban writer and author.

Until April 24, Casa de las Americas foresees a program featuring conferences, discussions between the public and participants, music and visual arts, as well as the awards ceremony recognizing the best works in the genres of Testimonial Literature and Historical-Social Essay.

In Theater, the results will be announced on May 28, at the jury’s request and due to the large number of submissions received.

Prieto emphasized the value of the competition at a time when culture is being degraded to mere commodities and entertainment, coupled with a decline in intellectual pursuits.

The event features events such as the exhibition “The Century of Fidel,” which includes pieces from the Haydee Santamaria Art of Our America Collection and pays homage to the centennial of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, as well as to his connection with Casa de las Americas and the Literary Prize.

VAlso included is the presentation of the poetry collection “Cuerpo quebrado lumbre” (Broken Body, Fire), by Venezuelan poet Esmeralda Torres, winner of the 2025 Casa de las Americas Prize, the awards ceremony, and a concert by the ZSAXOS Saxophone Quartet.
