Mexico keeps working on trade agreements with Cuba

Mexico City, April 20 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her country continues to work on sending material aid to Cuba and is working on trade agreements with the Caribbean nation.

“We’re working with them (Cuba) on several issues. I wouldn’t want to go into detail until we make further progress. One part involves AMEXCID (Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation),” the president said.

At her daily press conference, the head of the Executive Branch mentioned that the agency’s executive director, Alejandra del Moral—who, in her opinion, is doing an excellent job—has remained in contact with the Cuban counterpart and has been in charge of sending the material aid.

She added that the agency already has a branch in Cuba to speed up the arrival of the shipments and has been working on sending both food and other supplies, in addition to trade agreements, which continue to move forward.

Referring to the Cuban government’s decision to “further open its economy,” Sheinbaum said that this “means there can be investments in Cuba from private companies or through joint ventures.”

“So, we’re working on it and seeing what development possibilities there are, and well, we’re working on this with Amexcid, but also with the Ministry of Finance, Bancomext, and other Mexican government institutions,” she stated.

Sheinbaum has repeatedly expressed her support for the island, amidst the tightening of the U.S. embargo against the Caribbean nation, and at a recent summit of progressive leaders held in Spain, she proposed a declaration against military intervention in Cuba.
