Former Dominican officer sentenced to 30 years in prison

Santo Domingo, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) Former Lieutenant Colonel Hans Wender Lluberes will serve 30 years in prison for his role as the leader of an international drug trafficking network in the Dominican Republic, official sources reported.

Handed down by the judges of the Second Collegiate Court of the Santo Domingo East Judicial District, the sentence corresponds to the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which presented enough evidence to establish the former officer’s criminal responsibility.

Lluberes will also have to pay a fine of 50 million pesos as the head of the network, which was found in possession of more than 454 kilograms of cocaine.

The case dates back to March 2015, when authorities, following intelligence work coordinated by the Joint Information and Coordination Center (CICC) and the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), seized 450 packages of cocaine on an aircraft arriving from Venezuela at Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo.

According to the case file, the former officer was outside the airport terminal to make payments related to the illicit operation, but fled upon noticing the intervention. He was later arrested at Punta Cana Airport.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office, represented by prosecutors Milciades Guzman Leonardo and Ignacio Rojas, presented the case based on investigations led by prosecutor Bianca Duran.

The court also ordered that the convicted man serve his sentence at the Najayo Correction and Rehabilitation Center in San Cristobal province.
