Tehran denies requesting ceasefire extension

Tehran, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) Iranian media reported that the government of the Islamic Republic has not requested an extension of the ceasefire agreement with the United States.

According to a report by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, Tehran denied having asked for an extension of the truce declared on April 8 between the two nations.

The report emphasized that “the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz shows the persistent hostility of the United States toward Iran,” and warned that the country will not reopen this strategic waterway while the naval presence, which it considers restrictive, remains in place.

This statement contrasts with the announcement made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed to have extended the ceasefire at Pakistan’s request, “until Tehran presents its proposal,” without specifying the duration of the extension. The ceasefire was initially agreed upon for a two-week period on April 8, in an attempt to reduce tensions following the escalation of the conflict.

Subsequently, on April 11, Islamabad hosted a round of talks between the parties, but no conclusive results were reached.

The conflict intensified after the start of military operations on February 28, which reportedly resulted in thousands of casualties, before the truce came into effect with the aim of paving the way for an eventual negotiated solution.
