The event was presided over by the Cuban ambassador to Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero, who read the call for this act of patriotic and revolutionary reaffirmation. The statement denounces the U.S. government’s policy of hatred against the island and its continued threats of military aggression against its people.
The text also emphasizes the genocidal nature of the criminal imperialist blockade against the Caribbean nation, part of a brutal economic war waged by Washington for more than 60 years, aimed at causing suffering to millions of Cubans. It stresses the need to firmly and resolutely denounce such barbarity.
This agreement carries deep significance, as it affirms the unwavering commitment to peace, the very essence of the Cuban nation, forged with the deepest conviction that “defending ourselves is not only a right, but, as enshrined in our Constitution, the greatest honor and supreme duty of every Cuban,” the document states.
Rigoberto Zarza, Director for Europe of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP), who is currently on a working visit to Cuba, participated in the event.
At the close of the event, Cepero noted that this initiative takes place within the framework of the commemoration of the first major defeat inflicted on U.S. imperialism at the Bay of Pigs, where Cuba confronted a mercenary invasion that began on April 17, 1961, and achieved victory in less than 72 hours.
“Just like 65 years ago, we’re now in danger of imperialist aggression against Cuba, and today, as then, the Cuban people reaffirm, with the development of this initiative, their will to defend the Revolution, the Homeland,” the ambassador added.
