The head of government underscored the serious security crisis and the need for the urgent deployment of the Gang Repression Force (GRF), an entity that also includes international troops as mandated by the world body, the Gazzette Haiti newspaper
added.
“Our commitment to peace remains a source of hope for Haiti,” declared Fils-Aime, who thanked the current President of the Council, the Ambassador of Bahrain, Jamal Fares, for allowing him to address the body, the newspaper noted.
The leader announced the gradual recovery of several areas of the Haitian capital thanks to the joint efforts of the Armed Forces and the National Police, but advocated for the rapid deployment of the GRF to restore stability in the country. We are gradually and safely resuming the nation’s economic and social life, but the security situation remains critical. Forced displacement continues, and areas like the Southeast Department are targeted by gang attacks.
The GRF began its deployment this month, as announced by the UN, but without yet having all its reinforcements, which include the recent addition of a contingent of 700 soldiers from Chad, whose government announced a total deployment of 1,500.
Fils-Aime also reported on the training of new officers through a program called P-4000. Some 800 new police officers have been operational since January, and another 1,200 will be operational in June, while an additional 700 soldiers will reinforce the Armed Forces.
