Patriarch highlights Lebanon’s rights in negotiations with Israel

Beirut, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) The Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, said today that the ongoing negotiations between Lebanon and Israel do not involve any concession of the country’s rights.

After having a meeting with the Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, at the Baabda Palace, the religious leader stressed that the president will not accept violations of national rights during the process of talks.

Al-Rahi stressed that Aoun represents all Lebanese and does not respond to sectarian interests, while insisting on the need to maintain a unifying political discourse.

The statements come on the eve of a new round of talks between the two sides in Washington, with the aim of moving toward an agreement that puts an end to the conflict.

The Patriarch also noted the importance of guaranteeing humanitarian corridors to the southern localities of the country, in order to facilitate the arrival of aid and access to medical services for civilians, in accordance with international law.

He also emphasized the role of the Lebanese Army and the need to support it, amid efforts to consolidate stability.
