The UN agency also warned that this number could increase without sustained support to lessen the situation.
The head of the IOM mission in Somalia, Manuel Pereira, noted that the drought is forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes, and many more could be displaced in the coming months.
BHe also highlighted that losses in agriculture and other livelihoods, such as livestock herding, are causing displacement as a last resort.
The IOM estimates that nearly 125,000 people will be displaced by the drought during the second quarter of 2026 if the current situation persists.
In 2022, Somalia was pushed to the brink of famine by a severe drought, resulting in thousands of deaths, almost half of them children, and now it could once again face a deepening of hunger.
