Mexico City, Apr 27 (Prensa Latina) The executive committee of Mexico's Morena party has called for the organization's VIII Extraordinary National Congress to be held next Sunday, with the aim of approving the renewal of its leadership, according to press reports.

As reported, the ruling political party will elect a new president, following Luisa Alcalde’s acceptance of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum’s invitation to join the government as legal advisor to the federal executive branch.

In addition to that position, the Secretary of Finance, Iván Herrera, will also be replaced, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) stated, adding that the new appointments will be valid from that day until October 1, 2027.

The organization specified in the announcement that the meeting will be held at the International Convention Center, located in the Benito Juarez borough of Mexico City.

When asked about rumors that the Secretary of Welfare, Ariadna Montiel, might assume the party presidency, Sheinbaum reiterated last week that if any member of the government is interested in running for office or working with Morena, they should leave the administration.

The confirmed moves, along with those yet to be announced, come on top of the departure of Citlalli Hernandez from the Women’s Secretariat. Hernandez also moved this month to support Morena in coordinating the alliance process leading up to 2027. In June of that year, Mexicans will renew the Chamber of Deputies and elect 17 governors, as well as other positions in local congresses and mayoral offices.
