Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded to a joint statement prompted by Washington concerning the alleged threat posed by Beijing to the area.
According to Lin, the accusations are “unfounded” and distort the facts, while accusing Washington of spreading false information and discrediting other countries.
He emphasized that it is clear to everyone who is truly responsible for historically violating Panama’s sovereignty and attempting to control this international waterway.
He noted that the United States is responsible for politicizing and securitizing issues related to ports and maritime trade.
The spokesman stressed that Chinese authorities conduct inspections of vessels in accordance with the law and current regulations.
He stated that China’s position regarding the ports in Panama is clear and seeks to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
He also urged the countries involved not to be influenced by actors with hidden agendas.
