Cuban veterinary vaccines: The nation’s first line of defense

Havana, April 30 (Prensa Latina) Veterinary vaccines designed and produced in Cuba constitute one of the country's first lines of defense against the biological warfare waged by the United States.

Aníbal Domínguez, Director of Science and Innovation at the Labiofam Group, emphasized that agricultural outcomes would be different without support in preventing infectious diseases, which are devastating illnesses and, in some cases, generate substantial economic losses, the Animal Physiology expert told Prensa Latina.

Having our own technologies to produce vaccines that meet Cuba’s health needs is a great strength, as it guarantees our sovereignty from a scientific standpoint.

We do not depend on any external supplier to sell us these injectables; in fact, we are well aware that the United States government often persecutes suppliers. A very important detail, the veterinarian noted, is that Cuba formulates its vaccines to meet the actual health needs of its agricultural sector.

The Cuban scientist’s remarks came after he recently received the 2025 National Technological Innovation Award.

Cuba currently has seven vaccines to combat veterinary diseases, all of which share the distinction of being the first and only formulations implemented on the island during the revolutionary period.

The injectable vaccines protect against fowlpox, infectious bronchitis, infectious bursal disease, avian pneumoencephalitis, blackleg, equine encephalomyelitis, and bovine bacillary icterohemoglobinuria.
