The multilateral organization, comprised of former ministers and diplomats, rejected, in a statement released in this capital, President Jose Antonio Kast’s decision to withdraw support for the candidacy, which the previous government of President Gabriel Boric had boosted along with Brazil and Mexico.
Despite growing support from civil society for the candidacy, the government maintains a stubborn determination, and even Kast himself and his foreign minister reiterated their flawed arguments the same day that Bachelet presented at the UN her vision for the future of the multilateral body, the statement noted.
The forum warned that, transgressing ethical and political boundaries, her presentation was interrupted at the worst possible moment, during her international debut.
The organization remembered that Bachelet served as Minister of Health and Defense, twice as President of the Republic, the first Executive Director of UN Women, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
