Ethiopia hosts African Forum on Sovereign Finance

Addis Ababa, May 6 (Prensa Latina) The 2nd African Forum on Sovereign Finance opened on Wednesday in this nation to address growing fiscal pressures and debt sustainability challenges across the continent.

The event, running until May 8, has brought together representatives from African finance ministries and Debt Management Offices, along with major multilateral institutions such as the African Development Bank (ADB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank (WB).

Policymakers, financial experts, development partners, philanthropic organizations, credit rating agencies, and institutional investors, among others, also participate.

The forum is taking place at a time when many African economies are facing shrinking fiscal space, increasing debt vulnerability, and heightened climate-related risks, factors that limit governments’ ability to finance sustainable development.

Official sources stated that a growing number of countries face a high risk of debt crises, while debt service costs are placing significant pressure on public finances, often exceeding combined spending on essential sectors such as health and education.

Key sessions address issues such as sustainable financing in debt management, debt sustainability and solvency, institutional and data preparedness, and the development of country-specific roadmaps.
