The current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council stated in an article published on the RT television network’s website that Berlin is sabotaging compliance with important obligations under international law assumed in 1990.
“The problem in this case is related to the opening in October 2024, at the Naval Forces headquarters in Rostock (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), of the NATO Baltic Regional Naval Command, which is in fact spying on Russian ships,” Medvedev asserted.
He explained that the center is located on the territory of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), which violates the provisions of the final agreement regarding Germany, signed on September 12, 1990, between the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the GDR, with the participation of the USSR, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
The former leader pointed out that the Ministry of Defense and the German Embassy in Moscow are trying to justify the presence of NATO officers at its Naval Command by claiming that they are not violating the treaty since they are subordinate to the German Army.
However, in his opinion, these explanations fall apart under rigorous analysis. “Point 3 of Article 5 of the aforementioned document directly states that foreign troops, nuclear weapons, and their delivery systems shall not be stationed or deployed in this eastern part of Germany,” he added. “The withdrawal of Soviet troops from the territory of the GDR was linked to the unavoidable fulfillment of these legally established guarantees,” Medvedev recalled.
