UN recognizes Uruguay’s contribution to peacekeeping missions

Montevideo, May 7 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations recognized Uruguay's contribution to the organization's peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world.

The UN published a message on its official social media accounts commending Uruguay for the deployment of military and police personnel in high-risk and complex situations. “Uruguay contributes nearly 900 military and police personnel to five peacekeeping missions around the world,” the UN stated.

The message emphasizes that Uruguayan personnel “are serving peace, assuming great personal risks and working in difficult conditions to help others,” and concluded: “We thank them for their service and sacrifice.”

The operations include stabilization tasks, protection of civilians, logistical support, and assistance in areas affected by armed conflict or humanitarian crises.

One of the most significant cases is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the South American country has maintained an uninterrupted presence for 25 years.

In this mission, Uruguayan troops have participated in security, patrol, and civilian support tasks in a context marked by armed violence and regional instability.

Uruguay’s participation in peacekeeping missions spans over 30 years, with more than 50,000 peacekeepers deployed.
