“The heroism and sacrifice shown by the Soviet people, which included the deaths of 27 million of their compatriots, made it possible to defeat the advance of fascism in Europe and the threat it posed to the rest of humanity,” Rodríguez stated on social media.
For his part, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero commemorated the date and described history as a triumph for humanity, which today faces new threats.
“Eighty-one years after the images of the soldier raising the Soviet flag atop the Reichstag resonated around the world, it is urgent not to forget the Holocaust,” he asserted.
On May 9, 1945, Nazi Germany formally surrendered to the Red Army. Thus, the victory against fascism on the European continent was achieved, led by the struggle and resistance of the people, especially those who were part of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
