Uruguay condemns any attempt of military aggression against Cuba

Montevideo, May 8 (Prensa Latina) The Montevideo Departmental Council approved a declaration condemning "any attempt of intervention or military deployment against the Republic of Cuba".

The statement urges “the United States government to comply with international law and to establish a respectful dialogue on equal terms with the Cuban government”, in addition to reaffirming “the principles of non-intervention and self-determination of peoples.”

It rejects “the inhumane blockade and all types of economic embargo, as has been consistently expressed for more than 30 years by the United Nations General Assembly, with Uruguay’s vote.”

The text maintains that the blockade imposed by Washington “categorically undermines the possibilities for development and well-being of the people of the Republic of Cuba.”

It refers to President Donald Trump’s statements that “the United States will take control of Cuba almost immediately” and that he will send an aircraft carrier to the Cuban coast “as a pressure tactic to force the fall of that country’s government.”

It notes that “the blockade is extraordinarily comprehensive, abusive, and extraterritorial,” intensified especially during the pandemic with the implementation of 243 additional unilateral coercive measures.

These measures prevent the island from carrying out financial transactions and include sanctions against Cuban companies, persecution of oil companies, insurance companies, shipping companies, and even crews transporting liquefied gas or oil to the island, it says.

The statement notes that, as a means of strangulation, the US included the Caribbean nation on the list of “state sponsors of terrorism,” in addition to issuing executive orders that categorize Cuba as a “threat to US national security.”
