Cambodia strengthens health surveillance to face hantavirus risk

Phnom Penh, May 11 (Prensa Latina) Cambodia's Ministry of Health reinforced hantavirus prevention measures at Techo International Airport and activated emergency protocols in hospitals due to the risk of imported cases.

State Secretary of Health Youk Sambath led an inspection of quarantine facilities, where she instructed the medical team to monitor passengers’ temperatures and respond quickly to suspected cases.

Health authorities indicated that inter-institutional cooperation will be strengthened through the disinfection of public spaces, the installation of hand sanitizer dispensers, and the preparation of quarantine areas, medical equipment, and specialists.

The ministry reiterated that hantavirus can be transmitted through contact with rodents and their secretions, although the World Health Organization considers the risk of global spread low due to limited human-to-human transmission.

The alert was issued following reports of infections on a Dutch-flagged cruise ship, where five confirmed cases and three deaths associated with the disease were recorded.

Cambodia designated Techo Santepheap National Hospital as an isolation and emergency care center, while health teams remain on alert to conduct testing and continuous monitoring.

The public was advised to keep homes and workplaces clean, prevent the presence of rodents, and use appropriate protection when cleaning contaminated areas.
