The meeting comes after Lula confirmed his support for Bachelet’s candidacy in March and emphasized the importance of a Latin American woman leading the United Nations.
The head of State noted at the time that his country, along with Mexico, would continue to support the former Chilean president for the position, after current Chilean President, Jose Antonio Kast, decided to withdraw his administration’s endorsement of her candidacy.
Bachelet has a solid track record and the ideal curriculum vitae for the position, having served as the president of her country twice, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Executive Director of UN Women, Lula highlighted at the time on a social media post.
Brazil announced that it had formally submitted Bachelet’s candidacy for UN secretary-general, an action taken jointly with Mexico and Chile, a country that at that time was under the Government of former President Gabriel Boric.
