More than 880 civilians killed in Sudan so far this year

Khartoum, May 11 (Prensa Latina) The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Sudan reported that more than 880 civilians have died as a result of the war so far this year.

The OHCHR also stated that these deaths represent more than 80% of all civilian fatalities in the conflict during this period, and denounced the use of drones as having drastically increased the number of civilian deaths.

For his part, the head of the OHCHR, Volker Turk, denounced armed drones as the leading cause of civilian deaths and warned of the danger posed by this deadly weapon, despite the upcoming rainy season, which previously provided a natural lull in ground operations.

Faced with this new threat, Turk insisted on taking measures to prevent the delivery of weapons, including drones, to the warring parties.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been suffering from an internal war, following the escalation of power struggles between the head of the army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

The fighting has destroyed countless livelihoods, plunging the country into a complex spiral of hunger and death.
