Manifesto in Brazil shows unwavering solidarity with Cuba

Brasilia, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Activist and leader of Brazil's Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), Joao Pedro Stedile, presented Cuban Ambassador Víctor Cairo with a manifesto of solidarity as a show of support for the island.

According to a post on social media, the diplomat received the document from Stedile, which condemns the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than six decades.

Supported by Brazilian legislators, intellectuals, political leaders, and activists, the text denounces the unilateral embargo and calls it illegal, noting that it has been repeatedly rejected by the international community in votes at the UN General Assembly.

It warns that conditions in Cuba have worsened in recent years, especially under the policies of the Donald Trump administration, which seeks to intensify economic pressure and revive approaches to regional domination associated with the Monroe Doctrine.

It adds that efforts will be made to alleviate living conditions in Cuba through concrete acts of solidarity, while urging international organizations such as the UN, the OAS, and CELAC not to be complicit in Washington’s policies.

Among the figures who signed the document, in addition to Stedile, are the Secretary of International Relations of the Communist Party of Brazil, Ana Prestes; journalist Breno Altman; writer Fernando Morais; former Workers’ Party leader Jose Genoino; economist Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr.; and religious leader Frei Betto.

As a significant theme, the text highlights the growing mobilization in the United States against its government’s policies toward Cuba and expresses the expectation that future administrations will abandon the blockade measures and join in relations based on social justice and respect for the sovereignty of peoples.
