The Ministry of Mines of the African country reported the results of an investigation comparing Cameroon’s official gold exports with the much higher gold import figures reported by other countries.
The investigation revealed the existence of approximately 200 illegal companies in the eastern regions, with more than 95% of them being foreign-owned.
Meanwhile, the authorities demanded an immediate halt to illegal mining activities, which far exceed those officially recognized by the state.
Illegal mining has increased in Africa in recent years, bringing with it numerous accidents that have claimed the lives of hundreds of people, despite government efforts to control its growth and development.
