As is customary since April, meteorological agencies, universities, and institutions are making their first estimates of the 2026 hurricane season activity: which will be somewhat below average in their initial forecast.
Colorado State University (CSU) noted that so far, the hurricane season, which runs until November 30, exhibits similar characteristics to the seasons of 2006, 2009, 2015, and 2023.
The CSU team predicts 13 named storms; of these, six are expected to become hurricanes, and two are projected to reach major hurricane status (Saffir/Simpson, Category 3, 4, or 5) with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or higher.
If any form, the first storm will be named Arthur, as part of the list of names chosen by the World Meteorological Organization’s Hurricane Specialist Committee, which maintains rotating lists of 21 alphabetical names for both the Atlantic and Pacific basins.
The list is completed by Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna, Isaias, Josephine, Kyle, Lea, Marco, Nana, Omar, Paulette, Rene, Sally, Teddy, Vicky and Wilfred.
