An article published on the website of the newspaper Il Faro di Roma highlights that this meeting was jointly boosted by the left-wing parties Poder al Pueblo (Power to the People) and Red des Comunistas (Network of Communists).
Speakers included Giulia Calo, a member of the National Coordination of Poder al Pueblo, and economist Luciano Vasapollo, a leader of Red des Comunistas. The event was also attended by Carlos Gutiérrez, First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in Italy.
Calo spoke about the current situation in Cuba, given the intensification of the criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, following the signing of executive orders by US President Donald Trump on January 29 and May 1, which violate the human rights of the Cuban people.
For his part, Vasapollo, co-founder of the Italian chapter of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity (REDH), commented that “After sixty-five years of blockade, the island is currently facing an increase in the permanent siege by the United States.”
He added that, due to its devastating effects, the blockade qualifies as “a form of economic and social genocide against the Cuban people.”
The event concluded with a collection of funds and medicines for Cuba, within the framework of the international campaign “Let Cuba Breathe.” Participants agreed to hold these meetings every two weeks and to develop other solidarity projects with the Caribbean nation.
