Cuba denounces US claim of universal jurisdiction

Havana, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The United States government is flagrantly violating the principle of sovereign equality by claiming an alleged universal jurisdiction to judge nationals of other states.

Yusnier Romero, Director of International Law at the Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX), made this remark on national television, where he described “as unjust” Washington’s accusation on the leader of the Revolution, Raul Castro.

Romero warned, “It has become fashionable for the United States to claim the power to judge everything that happens in the world,” a practice he described as a “quasi-universal and quasi-irresponsible” extension of its jurisdiction.

Jorge Leganoa, president of the Latin American News Agency Prensa Latina (PL), provided documentary evidence that dismantles the US narrative.

Leganoa explained that Brothers to the Rescue operated as the terrorist arm of Miami’s anti-Cuban mafia and conducted 25 incursions before February 24, 1996, with overflights over Havana, over Havana’s El Vedado neighborhood, and Havana’s Old Section to spread counterrevolutionary propaganda.

The PL president posed a crucial question: What would the US government do if a foreign aircraft flew over New York or Washington? “It would shoot it down,” he answered, to show the double standards of those who now judge Cuba for exercising its legitimate self-defense.

Regarding the current legal proceedings, he warned that they lack legitimacy and are part of a psychological warfare strategy aimed at audiences who did not experience the 1996 events.

He placed the offensive within the historical context: May 20 marks the beginning of the neocolonial era in Cuba, a date that the anti-Cuban right wing uses to activate escalating agendas.

Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio described these actions as “provocations” aimed at “creating pretexts and escalating the threat of military aggression.”

Fernandez de Cossio warned that, in parallel, there is “a concrete, widespread, and overwhelming war being waged against the Cuban people,” which has imposed, for decades, immense limitations on the national economy.

The diplomat also denounced the parallel media campaign, “of great intensity and extensive funding, aimed at distorting reality,” and convincing the people to blame the closest authority.
