Marti Statue in Colombo symbolizes enduring Sri Lanka-Cuba friendship

Colombo, May 20 (Prensa Latina) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, highlighted the statue of Jose Marti in this capital as an enduring symbol of freedom, dignity, intellectual courage, and lasting Sri Lanka-Cuba friendship.

“May this statue stand proudly in Colombo as a beacon of friendship between Sri Lanka and Cuba, and as a lasting tribute to one of the great voices of freedom and humanity,” said the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister in the presence of Cuban Ambassador Patricia Pego and other special guests.

Herath added that Jose Marti was much more than a revolutionary leader. He was a writer, philosopher, journalist, and visionary who dedicated his life to justice, sovereignty, and the liberation of oppressed peoples.

His words and ideals transcended borders and generations, inspiring nations around the world to defend their independence and preserve their national dignity, he added.

The Sri Lankan minister explained that Marti’s life reminds us that true independence extends beyond the political sphere, encompassing intellectual, cultural, and moral freedom.

The Sri Lankan minister pointed out that Marti’s phrase “Homeland is humanity” emphasizes universal solidarity, and in today’s interconnected yet increasingly divided world, this message is especially relevant.

At a time when the world faces growing conflict and uncertainty, the life and teachings of Jose Marti continue to vive wisdom and inspiration. His belief in unity, human dignity, and peaceful coexistence remains deeply relevant for us all, he stressed.
