Chile: Jose Marti Institute decries defamation against Raul Castro

Santiago, Chile, May 22 (Prensa Latina) The "Jose Marti" Chilean-Cuban Institute of Culture strongly condemned the United States' accusation against Army General Raul Castro, which, it said, is a pretext to justify further aggression against the Caribbean nation.

Raul Castro is a symbol of resistance, revolutionary consistency, and commitment to defending his homeland’s sovereignty. His trajectory and the respect he has earned among the peoples of the world are a moral shield against any attempt at defamation.

The organization made this statement after the US Department of Justice indicted the former president under the pretext of the 1996 incident that led to the downing of two aircraft operated by the Brothers to the Rescue terrorist organization.

The cultural institute stated that the manipulation of these events, deliberately ignoring the repeated violations of Cuban airspace and the numerous warnings issued by Cuban authorities to the US government at the time, is unacceptable.

It remembered that the Caribbean nation acted in legitimate self-defense and in strict protection of its sovereignty, in the face of systematic provocations by groups linked to terrorist actions against the island.

The text also denounces the double standard of the US government, which attempts to position itself as an international judge while maintaining a long history of military interventions, economic blockades, and human rights violations in several regions of the world.
