The people’s drive was a response to the formal indictment filed by the US Department of Justice against Cuban army general for the events of February 24, 1996, when Cuba acted in legitimate defense of its sovereignty against the terrorist organization Brothers to the Rescue.
Elian Gonzalez emphasized that the indictment is a new attempt by imperialism to subdue the Cuban people and force a regime change in the country.
“The current US administration, headed by Donald Trump, seeks to tarnish the legacy of our top leaders who, throughout the years, have been an example of solidarity, firmness, and fortitude for the peoples of the world,” he commented.
Gonzalez stated that the gathering was united by their anti-imperialist conviction that the future is decided within the nation and their support for one of the leading figures of the Cuban revolutionary process.
The event was attended by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Matanzas, Mario Sabines, the Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power, Marieta Poey, and members of political and mass organizations in the region.
