“Dear Commander! I warmly congratulate you on this important occasion: your 95th birthday. Your life’s journey is an example of selfless and courageous service to the homeland, dedication to your people, and defense of the country’s true sovereignty,” His Holiness wrote in a message published on the website of the Russian Orthodox Church.
He also highlighted Castro’s positive attitude toward the Russian Orthodox Church. “Thanks to your efforts and dedication, a magnificent Orthodox church dedicated to the icon of Our Lady of Kazan has been built in Havana,” he concluded.
Patriarch Kirill, fondly remembering their meetings on Cuban and Russian soil, wished Castro good health, a long life, unwavering strength, and prosperity, according to a statement from the Russian Orthodox Church.
