Jordan condemns Israeli settlement expansion

Amman, June 4 (Prensa Latina) Jordan condemned the Israeli authorities' approval of 2,162 new homes in settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the move a dangerous escalation that undermines efforts to achieve a two-state solution.

In a statement, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry asserted that the decision constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, as well as perpetuating the occupation and expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories.

Amman’s reaction came after the Israeli Civil Administration’s Higher Planning Council approved the construction of new housing units in three West Bank settlements.

According to reports in Israeli media, the body authorized the construction of 1,006 homes in the settlement of Givat, located in the Gush Etzion area of the southern West Bank, which will allow for a significant expansion of that settlement.

Additionally, 922 housing units were approved in the Har Bracha settlement in the north of the occupied territory, and another 234 units in Kiryat Arba, near the city of Hebron.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry maintained that these measures violate the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and hinder the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state within the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The ministry urged the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities and to exert pressure on Israel to halt unilateral actions that distort the reality on the ground in the occupied territories.

For its part, the Palestinian Presidency warned of the serious consequences of settlement expansion and urged the United States to intervene to curb Israeli policies in the West Bank.
