Solidarity with Cuba grows in Rome amid US pressure

Rome, June 4 (Prensa Latina) Solidarity with Cuba is growing in Rome, the Italian capital, where various initiatives are underway, including the display of the Cuban flag at official institutions, as a gesture of closeness to its government and people.

The Cuban flag was raised at the headquarters of Municipality VIII, one of the city’s most populous and important districts, during an official ceremony held yesterday. The event was attended by the Cuban ambassador to Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero, and the president of the local government, Amedeo Ciaccheri.

Also present at the historic event were city council members and representatives of various organizations, including the president of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (ANAIC), Marco Papacci, and Francesco Verdolino, director of the ARCI Social Promotion organization.

This municipal initiative, of great symbolic and political significance, aligns with the Rome City Council’s approval on April 2nd of a motion supporting Cuba, in response to the hardening of the United States’ aggressive policy against the country, including an economic blockade that violates the human rights of its people.

The raising of the Cuban flag represents an institutional act intended to highlight the commitment of Municipality VIII to promoting solidarity with the island, according to a report published on the website of the newspaper La Repubblica.

The decision was strongly supported by Ciaccheri, who emphasized that “international solidarity is not a secondary value for a local institution, but rather a tangible sign of the principles of social justice and defense of democracy that honor our Republic, in Italy and throughout the world,” the report states.

In his speech, Ciaccheri also reaffirmed that “today we cannot fail to stand with Cuba, its people, and its government,” a clear stance in an international context marked by growing tensions, including the intensification of the genocidal US economic blockade against that nation and the threat of imperialist military aggression.
