Somalia: Regional body concerned over reports of violence

Djibouti, Jun 4 (Prensa Latina) The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) expressed its deep concern over reports of violence in Mogadishu, amid growing political tension in Somalia.

The IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu decried in an official statement all acts of violence and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, reduce tensions, and resolve differences through peaceful, inclusive, and constructive dialogue.

Gebeyehu stated, “At this critical juncture, preserving peace, stability, national unity, and the achievements of the Somali state-building process is of utmost importance.

The IGAD urges all stakeholders to prioritize the interests of the Somali people and to seek peaceful solutions through dialogue and consensus.”

He reiterated that, as a founding member State of the African bloc, Mogadishu remains fundamental to the peace, security, and development of the region.

The IGAD reaffirmed its solidarity with Somalia and affirmed that it is willing to support efforts that boost dialogue, national cohesion, and lasting stability.
