Brazil: Social media shows rejection of Trump and Bolsonaro family

Brasilia, June 5 (Prensa Latina) 78 percent of the reactions on social media regarding the recent US trade threats against Brazil expressed negative sentiments toward Donald Trump and the Bolsonaro family.

A monitoring study conducted by the digital analytics firm AtivaWeb Datalab recorded more than 15 million interactions on digital platforms related to Washington’s proposal to impose 25 percent tariffs on Brazilian products.

According to the AtivaWeb Datalab study, cited by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, the narrative of a “betrayal of Brazil” gained traction, associated by numerous users with Trump’s actions and the political ties maintained by members of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s family with sectors of the US administration.

For AtivaWeb Datalab, the main driver of emotional mobilization was the defense of national sovereignty, a theme that garnered 74.2 percent positive ratings among users, making it the only narrative capable of achieving broad consensus across sectors with different political positions.

According to the report, 69 percent of interactions related to Flavio and Eduardo Bolsonaro expressed negative sentiments, compared to 18 percent positive ratings and 14 percent neutral ratings.

The company attributed this behavior to a perceived rejection of the possibility that international political disputes could have consequences for the Brazilian economy.

Trump also garnered a high proportion of criticism, as the study indicates that 62.9 percent of posts referring to the US president contained negative content, especially those that associated his decisions with external pressures on Brazil and potential economic impacts on the country.
